This section describes the cleaning procedures as required by ASTM D-5001. All safety precautions detailed in the standard regarding the safe handling of solvents should be adhered to.
Important...
The results of this test are very sensitive to the cleanliness of the test specimens and all apparatus and equipment that comes into contact with them. Any contamination of the specimens, hardware or test fuels will have an adverse effect on the results of the test.
Test ring cleaning
Manually clean the test rings of any protective coating by rubbing them with wipers or rags soaked in isooctane. Place the partially cleaned test ring in a 500ml beaker and cover with a 1:1 mixture of isooctane and isopropyl alcohol. Place in an ultrasonic cleaner for 15 minutes. Remove the test ring and repeat the ultrasonic cleaning with a clean beaker and fresh solvents. From now on handle the clean test ring with cleaned forceps or disposable nitrile gloves. Remove the test ring and rinse with isooctane, dry, and rinse with acetone. Store in a desiccator until required.
Test ball cleaning
Place test balls (up to 1 days supply) in a 300ml beaker. Cover with a 1:1 mixture of isooctane and isopropyl alcohol. Place in an ultrasonic cleaner for 15 minutes. Remove the test balls and repeat the ultrasonic cleaning with a clean beaker and fresh solvents. From now on handle the clean test balls with forceps or disposable nitrile gloves. Remove the test balls and rinse with isooctane, dry, and rinse with acetone. Store in a desiccator until required.
Removable hardware
Fuel bath, bath cover, test ring adaptor, test ring clamp washer and retaining screw, ball holder and securing collar. Clean in an ultrasonic cleaner with a 1:1 mixture of isooctane and isopropyl alcohol for 5 minutes. Remove and rinse with isooctane, dry, and rinse with acetone. Store in a desiccator until required.
Fixed hardware
Main shaft, spacer (as shown in step1) and any other parts that comes into contact with the test fluid. Clean with a wiper moistened with isooctane. Dry with a clean wiper.
