Friction Modifier Evaluation data using Rough Discs

For performing traction measurements on lubricants and traction fluids it is normal to use very smooth balls and discs (typically 0.005µ Ra) to ensure that the ball/disc contact is operating in the full elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime. For some tests however it is advantageous to use rougher discs (typically 0.15µ Ra) to enable measurements to span the EHL, mixed and boundary regimes.

The chart below (taken from work done by Jocelyn Graham at Imperial College, London) shows a base oil with and without friction modifiers, tested with smooth and rough discs. A clear discrimination is achieved using the rough discs, whilst the smooth disc results are virtually identical.
